Professional Development and Consulting Philosophy

I believe the best professional development comes from meaningful, continued interactions.

Therefore, I strive to conduct professional development with the following:

  • Co-creating or developing lessons and curriculum for continued use
  • Ongoing coaching and mentoring to address individual- and school-level literacy concerns
  • Engaging, ongoing professional development that is iterative based on teacher- and school-level goals

I prefer to meet with teachers/administrators in advance to discuss literacy goals, then use my corpus of knowledge, expertise, and research to develop professional development programs to address those goals. My sessions focus heavily on instruction, strategies, standards, and assessment. I strive to leave participants with resources, a positive sense of identity for the content, trust in the research and theory, and efficacy to enact the instruction in their own classrooms.

Through this philosophy, I seek to help teachers, administrators, literacy coaches, and all others with whom I work to continually develop and hone their teaching practices to meet the literacy needs of every student.
