K-12 Literacy Tutoring

Literacy Evaluation

The Empowering Advocate provides Literacy Evaluation for schools, parents, teachers, or individuals. I conduct a battery of assessments including authentic reading with a reading record, spelling inventory, fluency analysis, and informal reading assessment. From these assessments, I create a report with the child's reading level and specific recommendations for instruction.

Tutoring Services

Using the report generated from evaluation, I create a custom reading program to develop your student's or child's skills. At a baseline, most clients receive instruction in fluency, phonemic awareness and phonics, morphology (e.g., roots, affixes, reading multisyllabic words), and writing.

Pricing

Pricing is based on needs, but starts at $35/session.

Literacy Focus

Ie specialize in literacy tutoring for elementary through college. Specifically, a few areas I specialize in are:

  • Provide targeted instruction for students showing signs of dyslexia
  • Intensive practice in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
  • Practice with developing writing skills, from writing simple sentences to developing complex arguments
  • Reading and writing in the content areas
  • Study skills
  • SAT/ ACT/ AP Exam preparation
  • Writing college entrance essays
  • Elevating reading and writing skills for advanced classes (e.g., moving from middle school to high school, or transitioning from high school to college)

Details of my tutoring approach

Tutoring Information

  • I begin with an assessment session with the student. This typically takes 45 minutes and includes a battery of assessments to measure fluency, spelling and word study, comprehension, comprehension across the content areas, and writing. I can also add specific assessments if there are any other concerns related to reading/writing/study skills/etc.

  • At the same time as the assessment, I will also talk with the student about their interests and motivation. I like to also speak with the parent(s) to determine their goals and gain any other information. You are welcome to provide any assessments from the school that you think may be helpful as well, though this is optional.

  • After the assessments, I will prepare a short summary of the results with my initial recommendations for tutoring. These results serve as our baseline.

  • My general recommendation is tutoring 2 times per week, with sessions lasting ~30 minutes for elementary students and ~40 minutes for secondary students.

  • In each tutoring session, we will complete 3-5 activities. The activities are short, targeted, and intensive and will include practice with skills identified from the assessments.  I believe in tactile, kinesthetic instruction, so all activities are hands-on. Research has found that students identified as having dyslexia use different parts of their brain to read than non-dyslexic readers; therefore, different instruction is necessary. By integrating movement and hands-on activities, students can tap into those different areas of their brain.

  • All tutoring sessions are confidential, and I will never share information about your student or their assessments with anyone but the parent(s) unless given express consent by the parent(s). Any reports or documents I provide to the parent(s) may be shared by them with schools or others of their choosing.

  • Over the course of the tutoring sessions, I may modify the initial tutoring plan based on your student's progress. I will conduct progress reports every 2-3 weeks to assess progress and will keep the parent(s) informed of all progress and changes.

  • The initial assessment/consultation session is complimentary, and tutoring sessions are $35 per session. I invoice at the end of each month; for example, I will invoice on June 30 for all sessions occurring June 1-30. I will invoice by email and provide a link to my online billing software that allows for credit card, debit card, or ACH payments. If you need to pay by another method, let me know and we can work that out.
